Strange Sights Beyond the Atmosphere
Space already has a talent for making everyday things feel mysterious, but that’s probably to be expected. After all, you’re alone in zero gravity—you’re bound to see a few crazy things. Though astronauts are trained observers, even they have reported sights without a proper explanation. Come with us as we explore some of the creepiest ones.
1. Mysterious Flashes Behind Closed Eyes
Some astronauts have described seeing bright flashes even when their eyes were shut. That’s unsettling enough on Earth, but when you’re thousands of miles from home, it’s especially strange. Scientists believe these flashes come from cosmic rays passing through the eye or brain, which is reasonable, though it doesn’t help you sleep any better.
2. Strange “Fireflies”
During early space missions, astronauts reported tiny glowing specks drifting outside their spacecraft. It’s not certain what they actually are, but the likely explanation is that it’s simply ice crystals or particles reflecting sunlight.
3. Objects Outside the Window
The last thing you want to see in space is something drifting by the window. But astronauts have occasionally noticed odd shapes or objects floating nearby during missions. Now, before you blame aliens, many of these sightings turned out to be debris, insulation, or equipment from the spacecraft itself.
4. Pure Blackness
Several astronauts have spoken about the overwhelming darkness of space, and it’s a lot scarier than your everyday night. It’s not a monster, of course, but that endless black backdrop can feel deeply unsettling.
5. Earth
Oddly enough, one of the creepiest sights can be our own planet. Astronauts often describe Earth as beautiful and almost dreamlike from orbit. That perspective can be moving, sure, but it’s also eerie; everything familiar suddenly looks impossibly small.
