Stay Calm and Take Sensible Steps
Getting lost while hiking can be unsettling, but with the right steps and a calm mind, you'll be able to get out just fine. The most important thing is to avoid making the situation worse! With these five practical tips, you'll turn this difficult situation into a lesson for the future.
1. Stop Moving
As soon as you realize you are lost, stop walking and take a moment to assess your surroundings. Continuing in a random direction typically does more harm than good, so just take a moment to sit down, calm yourself, and find the best way to contact rescuers.
2. Check Your Supplies
It's a good idea to check your backpack and pockets for what supplies you have to work with. You don't know how long help might take to reach you, so taking stock of your water, food, clothing, phone battery, and first-aid items can help you know how to proceed.
3. Try to Identify Your Location
Use your map, compass, GPS device, or phone to compare nearby landmarks with your planned route. To the best of your ability, look for trail signs, distinctive hills, or other features that may help you figure out where you are.
4. Make Yourself Visible
Find a safe, open spot where rescuers can see or hear you more easily, and stay there. If you have any bright clothing, put it on, and use any whistle, flashlight, or signal mirror you have on hand.
5. Stay Put and Wait for Help
If you know for certain that you can't safely find the trail again, stay in one place and wait for assistance. Find a way to keep warm, stay hydrated, and try to make yourself as comfortable as possible while you wait for help.
